Climate-smart agriculture

One of DeSIRA-LIFT’s Service Area 2 (SA2) key goals is to support the development of sustainable multi-stakeholder partnerships between African and European organisations with a focus on climate-change adaptation and mitigation.

In this context, SA2 works to support Africa’s CAADP-XP4 organisations – namely FARA, AFAAS, ASARECA, CCARDESA and CORAF – mainstreaming evidence-based, climate-relevant innovation strategies and policies at the national and regional levels and following a multi-stakeholder approach.

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is one of the key areas of support requested by FARA.

The Biennial Africa Climate-Smart Agriculture Stakeholder Conference, organised by FARA and its partners, provided a key opportunity to achieve this goal. The conference offered a space to discuss, validate and scale up climate-relevant innovation strategies and policies at continental level. In the 2022 edition, the event brought over 250 participants to Accra, Ghana — in person as well as virtually — including members of academia, researchers, policy makers, practitioners, private sector operators, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders from the African continent as well as participants from various parts of the world, including Europe.

DeSIRA-LIFT contributed to the conference with the organisation of two events. On 14 September 2022, a thematic paper presentation was held on “Compatibility assessment of agroecology and climate-smart agriculture practices”. The event discussed agroecological practices contributing to climate resilience and concrete ways in which agroecology can support adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Moderated by CCARDESA’s Dr Baitsi Kingsley Podisi, the thematic paper presentation session included research contributions from 16 speakers from African and European countries on a wide variety of topics, unpacking the potential of agroecology for green and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

On 15 September 2022, a side event was organised by DeSIRA-LIFT and FARA to dive deeper into the subject, particularly as regards the contribution of agroecology to climate-change adaptation and mitigation and with multi-stakeholder perspectives, beyond solely research. Moderated by Isolina Boto, SA2 leader, the session featured successful approaches and practices from farmer organisations, private-sector operators, financial institutions, and African and European policy makers on agroecological innovations and solutions adopted in Africa. Drivers of agroecological transition supporting economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability were discussed as well as incentives to MSMEs and smallholders to transition and accelerate the adoption and implementation of agroecological practices.
