Hunger and malnutrition are on the rise, while the climate crisis continues unabated. Transformation of food systems is more urgent than ever — but in which direction and how so? DeSIRA-LIFT Service Area 3 (SA3) aims to support the European Union and the African Union in finding answers to these questions. It does so by funnelling and feeding evidence and knowledge — be it scientific or local — into policy dialogue and design.
The overall goal of Service Area 3 is to generate actionable knowledge and advice for African and European decision makers on the potential of Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) for sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive food systems. SA3 supports the achievement of DeSIRA’s Pillar-Three objective, which is to mobilise EU scientific expertise to support the DeSIRA Initiative, to provide strategic thinking and actions regarding innovation, and to help draw lessons for better research and innovation policies.
Furthermore, SA3 provides strategic advice to active DeSIRA Initiative projects so as to help them connect and align with relevant and emerging policy imperatives. SA3 also works to synthesise the combined lessons and evidence stemming from these projects as well as to translate this into supportive actions that can effectively guide the policy decision-making capacity of the European Commission’s Directorate General on International Partnerships (DG INTPA) and EU delegations.

Supporting policy dialogues at high levels for reviewing/detailing innovation strategies, policies, and investments.
